AVS Forum: Comcast vs. FiOS

Detailed HD comparison with videos, screenshots

Mar 27, 2008

There's a really interesting discussion thread going on over at the AVS Forum. Member "bfdtv" posted a very detailed, side-by-side analysis of some sample HD broadcasts from Comcast and Verizon FiOS.

The experiment was done in response to the recent news that Comcast had "decided to sacrifice some quality to improve quantity," and would be compressing their HD broadcasts. Said bfdtv:

" But what does that mean? How much difference is there, really?

To find out, I decided to compare the quality of the same programs on Comcast and Verizon FiOS. I recorded the same program from the same channel, at the same time, on both Comcast and Verizon FiOS in N. VA. I compared the size and bitrate of each MPEG-2 recording, as well as the subjective quality with video."

bfdtv's quantitative analyses of bitrates may fly over the heads of some less tech-savvy readers, but as usual, a picture is worth 1,000 words -- especially ones like these:

The differences in the screenshots are even more striking when viewed at full size (and, one would assume, even more so on a 52" plasma or LCD TV.) For more photos, video samples and a detailed analysis, go to:

Imagine a Comcast customer buying a 52" Full HD TV hooking it up just before the switchover and suddenly discovering they'd just wasted 3000 bucks. FiOS rules!

I guess if you were in an area that could also get FiOS, it wouldn't be that bad, but if not... yeah, that'd be one expensive piece of furniture!

I have comcast & have a 52" Samsung HD. My picture is just as clear as the Fios pic. I heard Comcast uses different compresion rates in Fios areas to match picture clarity in HD. I was also told when the digital switch happens in Feb'09 it will free bandwith from analog & will be used on HD. I'm not wowed my Fios.

You're lucky then, Dan (although I do wonder why they only use those compression rates in FiOS areas instead of their whole service area.) Your service might be good enough for the time being, but with the demand for HD and other bandwidth-intensive applications growing, I think cable is going to have a harder time keeping up over the next decades -- they'll still be using the shared medium of coaxial cable for the last mile, regardless.
