The Memory Wall

More Than Just Digital Picture Frames

May 08, 2008

The Jaegers of Middletown, Delaware, got a bunch of amazing stuff as part of their recent technology makeover.

Nancy got a collapsible quilting center outfitted with FiOS TV and a top-of-the-line, computerized sewing machine from Stony Brook Sew & Vac. Husband Rich got a networked "trading floor," with a FiOS-powered, 4-monitor data bank and wall-mounted, LED stock ticker -- enough juice to make even the most hardened Wall Street veteran giggle like a school kid.

But the pièce de résistance was their Memory Wall. (Do-It-Yourself instructions coming soon!)

Sure, new TVs, lightning-fast computers and other high-tech goodies are always fun, but as this video clip from the makeover reveal beautifully shows, nothing is more important than family.

The clip starts just after Rich Jaeger has been literally floored by his new stock-trading computer setup...but notice once the initial adrenaline rush settles down a bit, what truly captivates Rich is a simple, newly-framed family photo that had been languishing in a shoe box...

Now Nancy and Rich can enjoy hundreds of their favorite family photos all the time, rather than having them tucked away in a drawer collecting dust.

Guru Lloyd programmed the Memory Wall so that each of the 10 framed Coby LCD monitors has a separate feed. This means that each frame displays its own set of photos -- so if the Jaegers wanted to, say, have one frame just display wedding pics, another one display birthdays, etc., they can do that -- it's all just a matter of how they organize their photos and set up their feeds.

And the really cool thing about the Memory Wall -- and what makes it so different from ordinary store-bought digital picture frames -- is that it's networked via FiOS to their other family members as well. So if, say, Rich and Nancy can't make it to their grandkid's big game in New Jersey, their family can upload photos from the post-game party, and they'll appear on the Memory Wall instantly.

If you're handy, have a bit of time, a few 10"-19" Coby monitors, and preferably a FiOS Internet connection for the best results, you can actually build a networked Memory Wall yourself -- the Gurus will show you how on our DIY page soon.

In the mean time, here are a few behind-the-scenes snapshots of the original one that was built for the Jaegers:

Measuring the wall for the monitors, as the rest of the room is redecorated

Build Coordinator Dustin, checking the initial mounts

Shooting Gurus Lloyd and Alison for the show segment

80% there! The paint and wainscoting -- chosen by Raina Becker of Jake Design Collective -- really set it off.

A glimpse of how the monitors will look with frames. (Guru Brian is in the Jaegers' back yard, building the rest of them.)

All 10 monitors, mounted, networked, framed and painted, being checked by Dustin before the reveal

Decades of memories, zero clutter. (Oh yeah, that 47" LCD HDTV in the middle isn't too bad, either.)

The Gurus would like to thank:

Yeah, seeing that joy is the best -- I think I can safely speak for the whole crew when I say it's moments like those that make all that hard work so rewarding.

It's such a perfect segue for the Gurus, too, when Rich notices the framed photos on his desk...well, if you like that, you're gonna LOVE this...
