My Mom 2.0

If Mom can do it, anyone can!

Aug 22, 2008

With internet-enabled computers becoming more common place in the homes of all Americans, all people of all ages are educating themselves on topics they may have never known. As open as the internet is, it is critical that households with children and young adults take advantage of the limit less educational resources.

My mother has identified this and is taking the initiative to introduce useful online resources to her 7th grade math and Pre-Algebra classes. As a teacher for almost 30 years, she knows the exact problems facing inner city students, and has spent a lot of time and effort helping as many students as she can. In fact, both me and my younger sister were in her class in 7th grade! (And don't think there was any bias toward us; in fact she was probably harder on us than the other students!)

Me and my sis

The internet gives teachers like my mom the ability to publish something and share it with all the students right away. Her site, http://www.emellefamily.com/7thgrademath, is an online syllabus where her students and parents can access resources for the math class. In addition to finding out class policies, my mom has selected some really good online Math resources that allow students to excercise their brain right from the site! I tried out a few of the lessons, and I will honestly admit I missed one!

Go ahead and check out the site.  See of your math skills are at a 7th Grade level!

And if you are from Texas, there are great resources for the TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) test. Enjoy!

Your Mom's website is pretty slick, Lloyd! She must be really popular with her students and their parents alike.

By the way, I'm not sure if my math skills are at a 7th-grade level...but at least my jokes usually are. ;)

    Hi Lloyd,

I am having FiOS installed today and I am so excited. Thanks for sharing your mom's website with us. I would also like to share another great product from Verizon. Checkout the free resources at www.thinkfinity.org, share with your mom and I bet you she tells you it is the second best place to get math resources for educators.

    Al

    Looking forward to her feedback.

    Hi Al!

Welcome to the FiOS club! (Its warm and welcoming, I promise!)

Actually, while doing research for my Mom's site I visited the Verizon Foundation's website, and was amazed to see so many resources available for free via www.thinkfinity.org! This site is exactly what is needed to advance the level of education in inner city schools today. I work closely with some schools in Philly, and the resources provided through the Verizon Foundation are exactly what is needed to help the youth stay on the path to success. I will tell mom to post feedback of the site here.

    Thanks for sharing Al!
